Children are also victims of domestic violence. They may exhibit fear, anxiety, depression, anger and other overwhelming emotions. At any given time, 50% or more of shelter residents are under the age of 17. SAFEHOME staff are trained and experienced in dealing with trauma in children. Services for children include:
- Children and Family Advocacy
Assistance is available to help with child needs while in shelter including: school enrollment, medical care and daily needs. There are planned activities and other fun opportunities to make shelter living more comfortable for children. - Counseling Care

SAFEHOME’s licensed Children and Family Therapists are skilled in working with children who have been exposed to or affected by family violence. - The Children’s Center
The Children’s Center offers a caring, nurturing child care environment available while adults attend counseling or other advocacy appointments.
- Child-Friendly Environment
Residents have access to two TV rooms, one for families with children and one for adults only. - Outdoor Playground
There is a fun outdoor play area for children, protected from public view. - Computer Lab
Computers are available to help keep current with homework. - Child-Friendly Meals
The shelter kitchen offers a variety of meal options or residents may prepare their own food.
